Vulcan.Institute – Design & Technical Implementation
This case study documents the design and development process behind the Vulcan Institute digital experience. It covers conceptual framework, aesthetic direction, technical architecture, and iterative refinement across eight production phases.
The project began with establishing visual language—typefaces that evoke precision without sterility, colour palettes drawn from Vulcan environmental photography, and grid systems based on geometric harmony. Moodboards synthesised references from brutalist architecture, scientific instrumentation, and traditional Vulcan aesthetics. Technical implementation involved custom parallax systems, Three.js integration for spatial interfaces, and procedural audio generation. Challenges included performance optimisation for complex animations, accessibility considerations for motion-sensitive users, and cross-browser consistency. The development process prioritised progressive enhancement—core functionality remains intact without JavaScript, whilst interactive layers enhance experience for capable systems. Final testing covered performance metrics, cognitive load assessment, and user engagement patterns. The result: a functional demonstration of front-end competency, UX design thinking, and narrative-driven interface development.
